Taking our love of skateboarding, woodworking, and friendship to the next level.
Origin Story:
The Wormboard was born out of a love for skateboarding and a disdain for wasting wood. During Joe’s annual Skateboarding Summer Camp, which took place in Joe’s (school) woodshop, students got uncut decks from a skateboard company and over the course of the week they sawed, sanded, and decorated their own decks while also learning how to skateboard. A few years back a student wanted to make a very small cruiser deck, so when they were all finished sawing out their small deck from the uncut deck wood there was a lot of wonderful wood left over. Joe hates to see anything go to waste (especially a former tree) so he cut a long strip of wood from the leftover wood and threw some trucks, wheels, and grip tape on the strip of wood. He then put this new board outside with all of the other skateboards that the students were riding during camp.
The students LOVED the board! Joe LOVED the board! He called it the Wormboard (due to its long, skinny design) and went home and told his wife, “I think I might be on to something!” However, Joe is an artist and maker by nature--and in NO way a savvy businessman--so his original Wormboard spent the next year at Joe’s house. Joe rode it often; it even took the place of the board he previously loved and had been riding since 1998. That seemed to be the inevitable fate of the original Wormboard—one Wormboard for one man to enjoy.
However, Joe’s great friend (and ROBOT+BIKE bandmate) Kemp saw the Wormboard one day. He was intrigued. It was love at first sight. He took the Wormboard home to ride (he hadn’t been on a skateboard since the ’90s) and LOVED it! Kemp called Joe and said, “We’re starting a business!” Kemp knew that if a long-time skateboarder loved the deck and a once-upon-a-time skateboarder loved it as well, then EVERYONE would love it. Fortunately, Kemp also has some business and marketing savvy. And here we are…
About Joe and Kemp:
Joe is bald. He’s also a dad, hubby, friend, woodshop teacher, cartoonist, illustrator, singer/rapper (kinda), and children’s book author who loves to ditch his car for his bike or Wormboard as often as possible (and it’s more possible than you might think).
Kemp is picker, a grinner, a lover, and a winner who plays his music in the sun. He is a loyal friend, father, and hubby whose positive energy inspires others (or at least Joe) into action. He is also one of the last of a dying breed of gingers.
More Reasons to Wormboard
The Wormboard is for anyone wanting a peaceful, fun ride. Joe and Kemp also surf and snowboard and feel that the Wormboard offers that similar liberating vibe for the times when you are lacking an ocean or a mountain.
Whether you’re getting across campus, heading out for a pint, or just looking for some enjoyable exercise, the Wormboard is your choice for convenient cruising.
Need even more reasons to Wormboard? It has been shown that skateboarding boosts the blood flow in your brain, which leads to an increase in decision-making ability, creativity, and memory. Riding your Wormboard also releases endorphins in your brain, which leads to reduced stress and anxiety, as well as preventing symptoms of depression. Skateboarding teaches resilience and is also a mindful activity, which can lead to improved sleep quality and lower blood pressure. (from Skateboardershq.com)
